Is it ethical or even safe to have AI rewrite your resume?

The use of ChatGPT for all sorts of tasks…

From the mundane to the complex, from generating blog posts (not this one quite yet) to school assignments and even those assignments given to candidates during job interview loops – in the last three months the popularity of ChatGPT has take off.

So much that logging into the free account OpenAI allows – that sometimes you just can’t get in.

Stories on the news talk about how students have been turning in writing assignments that have been authored by ChatGPT. To date, most instances just copy/pasted into the doc and submitted. Early concerns are centered around how to educate considering this is available.

What I want to talk about, and has been a topic on LinkedIn with a long comment thread – using ChatGPT for your resume, LinkedIn profile and/or cover letter. What and how much should you use ChatGPT to enhance your online presence?

Some comments even discussed how they entered the take home interview assignment and Chat GPT spit out the answer.

I don’t advocate for the last point – it would be a terrible situation to start your new job not knowing how to actually do it. But to use ChatGPT to “build the scaffolding to hang your own edits onto” I believe to be perfectly fine.

I’m going to use ChatGPT to rewrite my Summary section of my CV. I’ll paste in the before and after versions:

Before
20+ years experience in software development, technical program management & system infrastructure with some of
the world’s greatest companies – hands-on leadership driving short- & long-term strategic direction, near term tactical
decision making, influencing & establishing software & systems architecture best practices, technical leadership,
recruiting & retaining top engineering talent, building successful teams.

After
A highly skilled and experienced Technical Program Manager with a proven track record of driving successful programs and delivering results in fast-paced environments. Possessing expertise in integration of cloud platforms and tool integrations, as well as design and development of solutions to complex problems using Salesforce and Microsoft Power Apps frameworks.

Now I will need to give you context for this. Before I asked ChatGPT to do this, I had pasted in the last three positions I worked. It “remembered” the prior entry and used it very well in the rewrite. The original summary I had incorporated a lot of information from the duration of my career, which ChatGPT didn’t have.

I really like the very first sentence. I believe I will use that one. But I would need to copy and paste the entire document in and wait on it to spit my resume out to get a complete and fully accurate version of a rewritten summary.

I am going to leave the question now up to you. Is using ChatGPT to write your resume, and potentially your LinkedIn profile provide you with any unfair advantage?

Would you, or even will you use it yourself?
